Fractal Harmony

FRACTAL CODE

Nature as a source of inspiration

The innovative acoustic wall panels with fractal patterns represent a breakthrough in biophilic design. They are based on research by Prof. Dr. Richard Taylor (University of Oregon & Fractals Research, USA) and 13&9 Design, uniquely merging design and science. Studies show that fractal patterns reduce stress by up to 60 percent, enhance cognitive performance, and improve focus. Discover an acoustic solution that aesthetically enriches spaces while also sustainably enhancing well-being.

Project inspiration

“An important finding from our psychological research is that even a short exposure to fractal patterns can reduce stress by up to 60 percent.”

Prof. Dr. Richard Taylor, Head of Fractals Research and Co-Founder of ScienceDesignLab

Fractal patterns for stress reduction

Spending time in nature has a relaxing effect—thanks in part to stress-reducing fractal patterns. These patterns appear in many natural scenes. Examples include trees, clouds, rivers, and mountains. Over millions of years, our eyes have evolved to respond positively to these patterns. FRACTAL CODE captures these natural structures and brings them indoors. Using a specialised computer program developed by Prof. Dr. Richard Taylor and 13&9 Design, these patterns can be applied both indoors and outdoors. Studies indicate that viewing these fractal patterns can lower stress levels by up to 60 percent, enhance cognitive performance, and improve concentration.

Harmonious colours

Carefully chosen colours are essential for creating a harmonious interior that seamlessly merges architecture and aesthetics. The large-scale FRACTAL CODE acoustic panels come in neutral colours that blend harmoniously with any environment. You can choose between monochromatic patterns or two-tone elements, which further highlight the fractal patterns to complement your interior concept.

Sustainable, locally produced, and highly effective acoustics

The large-scale FRACTAL CODE acoustic panels create a quiet and harmonious work atmosphere. Made from high-quality synthetic fleece sourced from recycled PET, these acoustic elements are produced with great precision. Local production ensures short transportation routes, making these acoustic elements a resource-saving, environmentally friendly, and forward-looking solution.

Precise acoustic planning

Our room acoustics experts help you optimise your building’s acoustics, whether for new construction or retrofit projects. We provide standardised calculations of reverberation time based on your building plans, allowing for targeted acoustic solutions. This approach ensures a pleasant atmosphere in each room that suits its purpose. We would be happy to advise you—please get in touch.

The story behind FRACTAL CODE

How did fractal patterns for interiors come about? We spoke with Prof. Dr. Richard Taylor, head of Fractals Research and co-founder of ScienceDesignLab, and Dr. Anastasija Lesjak, co-founder of 13&9 Design and ScienceDesignLab.

Where in nature can you find these fractal patterns?
Fractals, often called the “fingerprints of nature,” appear in many natural scenes. Trees, clouds, rivers, and mountains are well-known examples. Over millions of years, our eyes have evolved to recognise these patterns.

How were size, spacing, and repetition defined in product development?
The fractal patterns are generated by a computer program developed by Prof. Dr. Richard Taylor and 13&9 Design. This software offers architects and designers a variety of patterns for both interior and exterior applications. This flexible tool combines the designers’ artistic input with scientists' quantitative analysis.

What results have been achieved and proven so far?
The results, published in a special issue on the rationale of biophilic design in Frontiers in Psychology, show that viewing fractal designs of medium complexity is particularly effective in reducing physiological stress, enhancing cognitive abilities, and improving concentration.

Tell us more about the experiments.
Experiments conducted in Oregon (USA) and Sydney (Australia) confirm that these positive effects are consistent regardless of geographical location. The findings support earlier research showing that the preference for fractal complexity develops before age three and remains stable throughout life. Fractal patterns could positively impact a wide range of building users, celebrating neurodiversity.

What are the future plans for this area?
The goal is to expand the Fractal Library with additional patterns that can be used by architects, interior designers, and product manufacturers in diverse environments such as workplaces, public spaces, educational institutions, and healthcare settings. Through this commitment to fractal design, we hope to promote well-being and enhance performance by fostering focus.

Designer

A Collaboration of Science and Design
13&9 Design, led by Anastasija and Martin Lesjak (architect, CEO, and founder of INNOCAD architecture), is both a design studio for international companies and its own brand, creating product collections in collaboration with specialised partners in the fields of lighting, furniture, flooring, fashion, accessories, exhibition, and sound design. For FRACTAL CODE, they work with Prof. Dr. Richard Taylor from the University of Oregon and Fractals Research. He is internationally renowned for his innovation in using bioinspiration to enhance health and well-being. At the University of Oregon, he serves as the head of the Physics Department and the head of the Fractals Research Laboratory.
